Let’s talk about urges!
What are urges exactly?
Urges are feelings. They’re emotions! 😌
They have both a physical part and an emotional part.
The physical part includes all the symptoms you experience when you’re aroused. 🔥
The emotional part is how it feels to you when you describe it.
Urges can sometimes feel like you’re being pulled towards porn.
That pulling feeling is the emotional part.
It’s more imaginary than real but it’s an accurate way to describe it.
And it’s no less real when you’re having one.
Knowing what an urge is helps you overcome them.
Sun Tzu in “The Art of War” says,
“If you know the enemy and know yourself,
you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” 🥋
We can adapt this to:
“If you know the enemy and know yourself,
you need not fear the result of a hundred urges.”
Here’s the thing with urges that most people miss:
When you have an urge, it’s not caused by what “triggered you.”
It’s caused by what you think about that trigger.
Imagine you’re watching YouTube.
You see a Short with a woman dancing provocatively. 💃
That’s probably triggering for you.
You might avoid seeing things like that.
But when you see that woman, you’re not triggered by her.
It’s what you think about her that causes the urge.
In your mind, a woman who looks like that means something very sexual.
I don’t have to tell you what it means, you already know!
To your brain, what that woman dancing means is there’s a massive dopamine hit coming soon.
That’s the meaning the woman dancing has to you.
That’s why you’re triggered.
It can also mean pain too.
If you think, “OMG, I’m going to relapse and break my streak!”.
That thought creates a lot of fear & pain because of what that has meant in the past. 😖
Understanding this helps you stop watching porn.
Because you see that it’s not the world; it’s just your thoughts.
It’s just what you are making it mean.
This is great news because you have power over this.
You don’t have power over the world.
But you have a lot of power over your responses to urges. 💪
You’re not powerless over urges!
You are only powerless if you believe you are.
You have a lot of power when dealing with urges.
You have choices—way more than you thought possible.
When you start to see urges as just thoughts, you realize your power.
You see urges as “just thoughts” that aren’t true.
Deep down, as much as you think you want to look at porn,
you know you really don’t want to. Why else would you be trying to stop watching porn?
Understanding urges is crucial to stop watching porn.
Urges are just thoughts, not truths.
Recognize your power over your responses.
You can choose how to react.
Instead of feeling powerless, see the choices you have.
Change what those urges mean to you.
You have the strength to overcome them.
Each time you do, you’re one step closer to the life you want.
🌟 Remember Sun Tzu:
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred urges.”
