The Slip That Hit Me Like a Freight Train
When I was doing 12-step meetings for porn addiction, I was going hard. Three or four meetings a week.
Saturday mornings, I’d go to a meeting and get home around noon.
One Saturday, I remember it in great detail.
I got back from the meeting feeling great, encouraged, hopeful, and proud of myself for showing up and doing the work.
I felt like I was making real progress. I was doing everything right. I hadn’t had a porn relapse in a couple of weeks.
But then, thirty minutes later—BANG—I slipped on porn. Again.
Yep. After spending all morning in a recovery meeting, I watched porn.
I couldn’t believe it.
What the actual hell happened? I had come back from a meeting. I was clear-headed. Motivated. Feeling strong.
And thirty minutes later—I was right back in it.
Sitting there in shock, the realization struck me.
“Oh no… now I have to feel like shit again.”
That was the worst part. Not the slip. Not the porn. It was the shame that came crashing in afterward.
It was like a freight train bearing down on me.
It was as if my brain already knew the drill:
You screwed up! You suck! You are NEVER going to get this, and now you are going to have to feel LIKE SHIT!
I was dreading it but this time… something different happened.
The Thought That Changed Everything
As that shame started barreling in, I had this thought I would never forget:
“Wait! I don’t have to feel like shit.”
I don’t know where it came from. But in that moment, I saw it: I could choose how I felt about what happened.
I could decide NOT to drown in guilt.
I didn’t have to waste the rest of Saturday feeling ashamed. I didn’t have to let Sunday become a sad, silent funeral for my “progress.”
I didn’t have to let one moment ruin my whole weekend.
It was the first time I realized I could respond to a slip without hating myself.
And that changed everything.
What I Learned from It
That moment was powerful. I realized I could literally choose how I wanted to feel about what happened.
I didn’t have to feel guilty. I didn’t have to feel shame. It was all optional—and it was all mine to decide.
I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment was the beginning of something big. It was the first time I saw that I didn’t have to be at the mercy of my emotions.
That I could actually decide how to respond instead of just reacting.
Choosing how you feel is the way out of the shame spiral.
Most guys don’t even know that it’s an option.
They think feeling like crap is part of the deal. Some even believe they have to feel bad—like they’re paying their dues for their screw-ups.
But here’s the truth:
You don’t have to feel bad. You don’t have to punish yourself. And honestly? I highly recommend you don’t.
Because most of the time, feeling like shit is exactly what drags you right back to it.
How many times has one slip turned into a full weekend bender?
So here’s something you can try next time:
Right after a slip, pause and ask yourself:
“What am I making this mean right now?”
Seriously. Stop and answer that.
You will find thoughts like:
“I blew it again.”
“She’s never going to trust me.”
“I’m back at zero.”
And then ask:
“What else could this mean?” Not in a fake way. Not minimizing it. Just… what else is true?
Maybe:
“I messed up—but I caught it fast.”
“I’m learning what triggers me.”
“I don’t have to make this worse.”
This is how you start choosing how you want to feel—by choosing what you want to believe about this moment.
Because for most guys, a slip = catastrophe. It means starting over. Confessing everything. Feeling awful for days.
But what if it didn’t have to mean any of that?
What if a slip meant:
That happened. I’m done now. Let’s learn from it and keep going.
No spiral. No hiding. No shame loop.
Back to your life in 15 minutes—not 37 hours.
You can do that. That’s a real option—right now.
You have to choose it intentionally.
That’s not just a nice idea; it’s a skill. One that you can actually learn. And yeah, it’s hard to do alone—especially when your brain is screaming that you failed again.
That’s why I work with men who are tired of doing this by themselves.
Guys who want to stop hating themselves every time they mess up. Who want to stop losing entire weekends to guilt. Who want to stop spiraling, and just get back on track.
Because once you realize you’re the one giving a relapse its meaning
You can choose something different.
You can move forward without shame.
