There’s so much guilt and shame with porn addiction that you hide it from your wife. You convince yourself you can keep things afloat by bailing out the water and fixing the leak.
But the longer you leave that hole, the more water seeps in and eventually the weight of secrecy becomes too much. The boat goes down and so does the relationship you’ve built together.
Honesty feels terrifying and it’ll drive you to hide and lie and do all sorts of things just to avoid it.
But here’s the thing, you know that using porn is a pattern. You’re avoiding something painful like boredom or stress and turning to the pleasure of porn instead.
Not telling your partner is the exact same pattern just in a different context.
You’re avoiding the pain of telling her by choosing something else that is less painful (which is basically anything).
Not telling your wife is often just another trigger to watch more porn as well.
There are a lot of lies in porn addiction.
Your brain lies to you when it wants you to watch it.
You lie about your usage.
But the worst lies are the ones you tell yourself when you’re avoiding telling the truth.
Here are some common ones.
“It would destroy her.” You think you’re protecting her but you’re really just protecting yourself because again, you don’t want to face that pain.
“She wouldn’t understand.” You convince yourself she could never get it and that robs her of the chance to even try.
“She’ll leave me if she finds out.” What pushes partners away isn’t the porn itself, it’s the lies & secrecy.
So many partners have told me they could handle the porn but the betrayal was the thing that broke them.
They don’t call it betrayal trauma for nothing.
“I just need to fix it first.” You tell yourself you’ll confess once you’ve got it under control but that day never comes. Meanwhile the hole in the boat just keeps getting bigger.
“It’s not the right time. She’s going through a hard time right now.” You’re never going to find “the perfect time” for this conversation but delaying only makes it worse.
The truth is scary but the secrecy is what’s actually killing your relationship, not the porn.
