It’s never as good as we think it will be.
You know that moment when it’s all over when you realize that it WAS NOT WORTH IT!
And while you’re contemplating that, you get run over by the shame train, so there goes the day.
Start again tomorrow, I guess.
Honestly, I’m older than some of you and younger than others, and one thing I can share is that it’s never as good as you expect.
On that same front, it’s never as BAD as you think it’ll be either.
Recognizing this pattern of overemphasizing things has been a lifelong lesson. It continues to be one.
The sooner you can recognize it, the better it will serve you.
That porn clip is never as good as you thought it was when you were searching for it.
The dream job you wished for isn’t as great as you thought because it’s still a job.
Your lifelong hero isn’t as great as you hoped. He’s just a regular guy with flaws like everyone else.
It’s never as good as you think. It’s also never as bad as you think either.
You didn’t get fired like you thought you were going to.
You got a warning instead of a ticket.
You and your wife made up; she forgave you, and she didn’t leave you like you thought.
In any sample set, there are extremes. Sometimes, it’s WAY BETTER than you could have imagined, and it went WAY WORSE than you expected.
You have to allow for that too because nothing is always one way forever.
It would be easy to use this against yourself and think, if it’s not going to be as good, then why try?
I’ve been there, and it’s not a fun place to be.
That’s where you have to learn to manage this superpower.
You want to downplay how great that next porn clip will be so that you know it is not going to be as good as you think.
While at the same time, get excited about things that are worth getting excited about!
Get excited for 1 week without porn and how GREAT that will be.
For porn, if you can find a tiny space to start asking yourself, Will this be worth it? it might give you enough of a pause and reflection to make a different choice.
If you ask yourself that now, you’ll set a mental anchor that you can return to in the heat of the moment, so to speak.
If you often ask yourself this, your brain will promote it, as you are signaling that it is important. By asking and answering this over and over, you’ll train your brain on what is most important to you.
We all spend a lot of time thinking about this addiction and its bad parts. So, give your brain something new to think about: what you want, not what you don’t want.
Hope that helps, brothers!
